Magazines Direct and Yachting Monthly’s own app in the Apple App Store only work on Apple devices (iPhone and iPad – not Mac Desktops). Zinio, Amazon Kindle, PressReader, Readly, Magzter, Cafeyn and Pocketmags will work on Android and Apple devices. The only three platforms for desktop are Zinio, Pocketmags and Cafeyn.
PBO Digital is the best way to get the full magazine experience if you’re unable to buy your regular copy at the newsagent or supermarket. But it’s not as straightforward as browsing the shelf! There are nine different digital magazine platforms (shops) online and four types of device you can use to access the platforms.
So first choose your device, then choose your platform.
1. What device should I use?
You can get PBO Digital on a desktop computer (Mac or PC), a phone, tablet or an eReader device. The options for desktop/laptop are limited in comparison to phones and tablets, but the bigger screen area and resolution may be an attraction. See the table below for options.
Apple iPhone and iPad
PBO Digital subscriptions are currently available on iPads and iPhones (iOS devices) via our own eCommerce platform, Magazines Direct. Very soon we will be offering the opportunity to purchase PBO digital single issues too.
We have our own digital magazine platform (PBO app) on the Apple App Store. Simply search for Practical Boat Owner and download the app for free. Purchases are made through your Apple ID and linked to the credit/debit card associated with this (which you usually set-up when you first purchase your phone). You can manage your subscriptions on your devices or through the iTunes Store.
Note that ANY of the other providers (see table below) will work on Apple devices.
Android phones and tablets
All other phones and tablets use Google’s Android operating system. To buy a digital magazine on an Android device select your preferred digital magazine platform (app) from Google’s Play Store. Download the app, open it and follow the instructions.
eReaders
If your eReader supports downloads from either iOS (App Store) or Android (Play Store), you will normally be able to access digital magazines. On your eReader, tap the Apps button on the device homepage, and search for your preferred app in the store. Download the app, open it and follow the instructions.
2. Which magazine platform should I buy from?
For PBO Digital there are nine different digital magazine platforms available. Magazines Direct and PBO’s own app in the Apple App Store only work on Apple devices (iPhone and iPad – not Mac Desktops). Zinio, PressReader, Readly, Magzter, Cafeyn and Pocketmags will work on Android and Apple devices. The only platforms for desktop are Zinio, Pocketmags and Cafeyn.
Some are like supermarkets that sell everything to everyone in a variety of bundles and price options, while others are like local newsagents with a limited range tailored only to a certain type of shopper.
All platforms require you to create an account before you can make a purchase. However, once you have an account, most platforms will allow you to read your magazine on five devices simultaneously, with up to five users per subscription.
We, the publisher, have no control over their distribution. Nor can we influence their prices, other than by stating our recommended cover price (which is the same as our print magazine).
Take a look at the table below (Click on the image to enlarge) to see which package suits you best. Prices are accurate as of March 2020.
Zinio App For Mac3. Can I buy single issues or do I have to subscribe?
You don’t have to subscribe to get a digital copy of PBO, though if you’re a regular reader you may find some of the subscription offers more attractive, and some deals offer access to unlimited other magazines too.
Single issues
If it’s the current issue, you’re after take a look at PBO app, Zinio, or Cafeyn (formerly LeKiosk), which charge the same as the print edition of the magazine (slightly less for Cafeyn).
Cafeyn and the PBO app offer ‘one-month’ subscriptions. At £3.99, this is cheaper than buying a single issue, but renewal is automatic, so if you just want the one issue you’ll have to remember to cancel before the month is up. Note – deleting the app doesn’t automatically cancel the subscription.
For single back-issues, you’re limited to PBO app, Zinio or Cafeyn, though note that certain titles may still not have been converted for these platforms. Where they are, they appear automatically on your device.
Subscriptions
Digital magazine platforms typically give you two options – subscribe to just one brand (eg. PBO on Zinio at £37.99 per year) OR subscribe to everything (5,000+ titles) for an annual fee. In fact, at the time of writing, Magzter is offering a 50% discount on its Gold (all-inclusive) subscription, which means it’s actually cheaper to buy everything than a year’s PBO magazines at £58.
Other platforms offer monthly, rather than annual subscriptions, such as Pocketmags (£3.99).
(Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: I just subscribed, now what?
A: You will be receiving an email with a link to your first issue. The link will direct you to the Zinio site where you’ll create an account and set up your Zinio library. We suggest downloading Zinio Reader 4 - it will automatically download future issues to your desktop as they become available.

order with

We suggest downloading Zinio Reader 4 - it will automatically download future issues to your desktop Zinio library as they become available.
Q: What are my viewing and downloading options?
A: Zinio gives you two great ways to view your magazines on a computer: online using a web browser or offline using the Zinio Reader software.
The Online Reader gives you the ability to access your magazines from any web browser with Adobe Flash installed. To access your magazine, simply go to Zinio.com and click on My Library. Once you're in the My Library area you can click on the thumbnail image of your magazine to have it open in a new browser window. Note: a high speed internet connection is required.
The Offline Reader allows you to download your magazines onto your computer. Once downloaded, your magazines can be viewed without an internet connection. To get started, you need to install the Zinio Reader (compatible with Windows Vista/XP/2000 and Mac OS). You can download it by clicking here. Once the Zinio Reader is installed, any magazines that are available to you will download automatically. One benefit of the Offline Reader is that pages load more quickly because the magazine file is being read directly from your computer and not over an internet connection. (This is similar to downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view PDFs.)
It's completely your choice which version of the Reader you use. We encourage you to use either or both, depending on how you like to read.
Q: How do I read my magazine once I have it open?
A: The two most basic things you will need to know are how to move from page to page and how to zoom.
To move from page to page, use the left and right arrow keys at the top of the toolbar. Alternatively, you can use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard or click on the lower corners of a magazine to flip through pages.
You can zoom on a page to view text more clearly. You can zoom by clicking anywhere on the page of the magazine or by clicking on the magnifying glass button (with the plus symbol) on the toolbar. While in zoom mode, you can click on the space bar to read a page and be taken to the top of the next page when you've reached the end of the current page. To zoom back to the standard two-page view, simply click anywhere on the magazine or click on the magnifying glass (with the minus symbol).
Once you get the hang of moving forward and back and zooming, you can explore other great navigational features such as the scrollbar and table of contents button. If you have the Offline Reader installed, you can click on the help button on your toolbar for more tips.
Q: How will I be able to access new issues?
A: You will receive an email notification as soon as a new issue becomes available. It will direct you to the My Library section on the Zinio website where you can view your magazine online or trigger it to download for offline viewing. If you have the Offline Reader installed and don't do anything, your magazine will download automatically at some point in the course of the day. By default, the Offline Reader periodically checks to see if there is anything new to download and automatically downloads it for you if there is!
Those are the basics! If you need further help, please take a look at this help section for quick answers to your questions. If you need further assistance, please contact us at [email protected].
Q: How can I view my magazines on an iPhone or iTouch?
A: The Zinio iPhone app (also compatible with iPhone Touch) is now available as a free download from the Apple iTunes U.S. store. Availability in other countries will be coming soon. The app allows you to download Zinio publications directly to your iPhone when connected to a Wi-Fi network (required). During the initial, limited launch, users will have access to the current issue of several magazines, if available to their account. You can visit http://www.zinio.com/iphone for the most current list.
Access to our entire catalog of thousands of magazines and books will become available over time. We are working diligently to make all titles and past issues viewable. For the most current list of available titles, please open the app and tap the 'Shop' tab at the bottom of the screen. We encourage you to install the app even if your current Zinio subscriptions are not yet available. All iPhone app users will receive a free sample issue of both VIVmag and PC Magazine. Once installed, your magazine subscription will be automatically delivered to one computer, and you will need to manually download it on the second computer (which is easy to do). Which computer gets the magazine automatically? The computer that is turned on and happens to ping the zinio.com server first after the magazine becomes available will get it automatically.
